Leaving your job is not a decision that is to be made on a whim. It requires a lot of forethought and oftentimes, it is not so simple as it sounds. There are many times when an employee should leave a job, whether it is because of relocation or transferring to another company. If you find yourself in the position of wanting to leave a job, you should really familiarize yourself with the mistakes that many people make when quitting their job.

While many people may think that making mistakes when leaving a job is not that big deal, there are many problems that could be associated with leaving your job incorrectly. Leaving on a bad note:

We’ve all dreamed of going out with a bang, but although it may sound tempting, you really should strive to leave on a good note. You don’t want to add insult to injury by losing a potential reference. And if you want to be rehired by the same company, you really want to leave with them wanting you to come back.

Don’t forget to ask for a reference:

One of the most positive aspects of leaving a job is the potential for a reference. Above all else, don’t forget to ask for a reference from your immediate superior. That will indeed speak much more than anything else.

Don’t disrespect your past employer or coworkers:

If you really didn’t ever get along with your coworkers or boss, that is fine, but don’t air your dirty laundry in public. This just doesn’t include interviews, it is never a good idea to go around and be disrespectful. Imagine you are a hiring manager. Would you want to hear about a potential employee that had a lot of problems during the course of the job?

Don’t make off with office supplies:

Believe it or not, many employees find the urge to make off with company supplies, or destroy them altogether. Not only is this illegal, you could get in a lot of trouble for doing so.

Give the proper notice:

The average amount of notice that is given when leaving a job is two weeks. You really want to give your employer the proper amount of time to find a replacement. This is probably the greatest asset you can provide them.


Don’t talk about leaving before giving notice:

You may have thought about leaving for years, but that doesn’t mean you have to let it on. Not only may this hinder any opportunity for advancement, there are some employers that many terminate employees. Keep the thoughts to yourself until you give notice.

While leaving a job is definitely a hard decision for many people, there are many who want to leave their current job. This may be due to moving to a new town or finding a better job. With anything, it is always best to leave by putting your best foot forward.
